TAZ BERLIN HEADQUARTERS

Berlin - Germany

  • CUSTOMER: TAZ Berlin (taz, die tageszeitung. Verlagsgenossenschaft eG, Berlin)
  • ARCHITECT / DESIGNER: E2A Piet Eckert und Wim Eckert Architekten
  • LIGHTING DESIGNER: PHA GmbH
  • PHOTOGRAPHER: Lukas Huneke

The taz Berlin newspaper has moved its headquarters to Friedrichstrasse in Bessel Park after spending 25 years across from Checkpoint Charlie.

Entrusted to the Swiss architects from the E2A firm, the building is reminiscent of the Vladimir G. Shukhov’s "Shabolovka” radio tower in Moscow, an early ‘20s era constructivist building. Concrete diagonal bracing along the outer walls create a housing that does not require additional bearing structures on the inside. This way, the vast interior spaces are freed up, with a bay of over thirteen metres, capable of flexibly satisfying a wide variety of work environment forms of use.

The lighting must also comply with this vocation for flexibility, so, for the work areas, the PHA GmbH technical lighting firm opted for solutions without wall or ceiling mounted fixtures, instead preferring floor lamps positioned in correspondence to the operational stations. An ideal solution for overcoming the difficult design challenge provide to be the lamps from the SL720SL range in the L and XL versions, provided by PERFORMANCE iN LIGHTING.

Lighting plays a significant role in improving wellness and concentration in the workplace, especially in settings where the operating pace for the workers with tight deadlines can be very stressful. The SL720SL floor lamps comply with the DIN EN 12464-1 standard for lighting in the workplace, guaranteeing correct glare limitation, and they favour visual comfort, thanks to the micro-prism diffusers which allow even diffusion and high lighting uniformity.

The dual light emission, direct and indirect, can be adjusted independently, thanks to a control located on each fixture, so the individual user can autonomously change how much direct light falls on the work surface. The indirect component, on the other hand, is controlled on a general level, thanks to its predisposition for DALI dimming which allows the lighting to be adjusted in order to provide optimum light for the well-being of the workers.
