Granada - Spain

  • CUSTOMER: TECH-LUZ Iluminacion
  • ARCHITECT / DESIGNER: Miguel Angel Martin Cespedes
  • LIGHTING DESIGNER: Benito Garcia Davila

Symbol of Granada, and one of Spain's major attractions, the Alhambra is a Moorish palace-fortress of incredible beauty with an area of more than 100,000 square metres. Standing on a hill called La Sabika, it dominates the entire city and surroundings of the Sierra Nevada. Inside the tall, red walls of the fortress stand the wonderful decorated Moorish palaces; historically the Alhambra was a fortified royal citadel known as early as the ninth century that could operate autonomously from the city since all the services, such as residences, mosques, shops and schools, were located within.

PERFORMANCE iN LIGHTING provided its experience and products to illuminate the facades of some of the most important buildings in the complex including the Palace of Charles V, the Church of St. Mary, the Tower of Justice and the Wine Gate. A total of about 30 professional floodlights ensures lighting that has been attentively designed and calibrated to enhance the architectural details of the structures.

The Alhambra is probably one of the greatest masterpieces of Islamic art and is also the only one to have survived almost entirely intact to the present day. Along with the gardens of Generalife and Albaicín, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
